Home inspirations

Posted by on May 18, 2010 in craft, love | 1 comment

I’m a renter and always have a hard time getting inspired to put a lot of work into doing decorating — even though everywhere I’ve lived, it always feels kind of fleeting because there isn’t the kind of commitment that you have with owning — we can pack up and move with just 30 days notice and then you have to start over.

Which is silly because everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve stayed for ages. And so what anyway! Half the reward is making something sweet and admiring it, who cares if it might end up being something left behind or changed. Life is too short! So I’ve been trying to keep an eye out for bits and pieces that I like to give me a little kickstart and am going to start sharing them.

Put this on while you’re admiring: Best Coast Should Be Your Sound of Summer. [And check out the whole Citizen Insane mp3 blog while you’re at it, it is full of sunny, poppy, fun summer music, which is my favorite kind. You can stream the whole playlist here.]

Painting class

Posted by on May 12, 2010 in craft | 0 comments

From painting class, since you asked, and if you cannot say anything nice I will send the painting to you and then you’ll be sorry:

Project #1, butterfly

Sample board #?, climbing, falling, hot, cold, and something I forget

I am okay with the butterfly, it was originally going to be one that’s local to Santa Cruz and I can’t remember the name, but I changed it to cream/brown instead of white/grey. I like the water, hate everything else on the other one.

I am still working on my flower, next is self-portraits and everyone’s skin is coming out c. 1985 fake-and-bake orange except for this one girl who obviously has a lifetime of painting experience and rips through all the assignments churning out masterpieces.

More sea glass

Posted by on Apr 20, 2010 in craft, photo | 7 comments

What to do with all this sea glass? I thought I’d be able to drill it but the video tutorials I’ve watched feature some fancy machinery I do not possess. I tried a wire wrap but that’s going to take a lot more practice before it’s presentable, and I’m not sure how I feel about so much of the glass being covered up anyway. I do like the sea glass chandelier I saw on flickr, but I’m a ways from having enough glass to start thinking about that. I think for now I will just admire it. Maybe I’ll pile some up in the sunnier windows of our home.

I was featured in a treasury on etsy. Please click through and leave a comment, it helps rank it higher [so i’ve heard], and click through — everything on there is super cute and I am quite flattered.

New Jumble Necklaces on etsy

Posted by on Apr 16, 2010 in craft, photo | 0 comments

I showed you my yellow Jumble necklace yesterday, today I listed three other Jumble necklaces on gwen.etsy.com for you all to have. I am quite pleased with how they turned out.

Under the Sea Jumble necklace

Queen of Hearts Jumble necklace

Teal or Turquoise? Jumble necklace

and this was the first one I made, which has been snapped up already:

Brass bow Jumble necklace

This morning I saw the Mademoiselle Anna necklace by Thé Dansant and the similar pendant there surprised me. I don’t know why I would be so, people have been hanging beads from bows forever and pink is lovely with brass and that is that. It’s just funny having had the same idea as someone across the world…it is such a small one sometimes.

Yellow jumble

I’ve been making these collage-y necklaces trying to use up some of the random bits and bobs I’ve had hanging around. I made a pinky-brown one first, that Jessica claimed. This was the second, which is mine.

Speckled Egg Petite Inspiration Box Swap — Nesting Edition

Posted by on Apr 8, 2010 in craft, photo | 1 comment

I just participated in my first swap, and when I received two of my three co-swapees boxes, I was kind of surprised that they both had picked out bird themes — what a coincidence!

From Lonnie:

Lonnie's swap box

From Maggie:

Maggie's swap box

From Cari:

Cari's swap box

The stuff inside the boxes is at least as wonderful as the outsides.

But then I went back to the Speckled Egg Petite Inspiration Box Swap — Nesting Edition page and read the instructions and that is the thing. I thought “nesting” like in “domesticity”. Which is kind of silly because if you go look, there is a GIANT BIRD at the top of the page and it’s spelled out pretty clearly. So I totally failed my first swap.

I feel both guilty and amused. I like how my boxes came out anyway.

Before and after: corner shelf

Posted by on Mar 9, 2010 in craft, photo | 3 comments

This is the corner shelf I’ve been looking for for ages. It was at the antiques store in town, out front and marked down from $49 to $15. My sister and daughter both mocked me but I picked it up anyway.

Before #1

I cleaned it then spraypainted it white (I will never spraypaint anything again, it took forever and several days later, my wrist is still weak and achy.) and now it is cute as anything and everyone is jealous.

After #1

I haven’t done anything like this in a very long time, but now I want to paint every bit of wood in the house.

My creative space 2/17

Posted by on Feb 17, 2010 in craft, photo | 6 comments

Things I’ve been working on this week…

1. I bought some silver spraypaint and tried it out on some unfinished wooden beads — they came out pretty well, they have a nice vintage mod-style texture — and a piece of glass — not so well, it is not as reflective as I’d expected it would be, though enough to get something of a self portrait in.

I have a can of silver spraypaint and I'm going to use it

2. Contemplating my sea glass I got on a trip to Victoria BC. It’s been sitting in a tin on the porch for several years, I finally cleaned it up and put it in this nice glass jar I bought at an estate sale last month. I may make some pendants. I might just leave it like this. I might try out some of the sea glass projects I’ve been bookmarking lately.

3. I had my first sale on Etsy — SO EXCITING. This is a red charm bracelet I was working on at craft night [Thursdays, 6-9 pm at Julie’s if you’re in the area]. It has vintage buttons and various glass beads — flowers, ladybirds, hearts, and other lovely things — all in warm reds and oranges. You can see some of my other sale items at gwen.etsy.com.
