I am so delighted that two of my PINK photos from yesterday were highlighted at
Poppytalk. I am in some seriously good company, go check the others out.

Today is green for Poppytalk Spring Color Week!

...sure did treat me nice

Parrots are full of surprises

The last one is of the feral parrots in San Francisco that the book and documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill are based on. They come down from the hill to nibble at the cherry blossoms in the spring and it is like nothing you have ever experienced. The movie’s pretty darn good, too, highly recommended if you can’t make it over to downtown SF.

what are you making today?

two dinners I made this week, that both turned out really, really well:

1. pasta

while boiling trottole [which is this crazy top-shaped pasta they had at Safeway, photo, i am SO going to make some mac & cheese with it]:
halve and brown sausages [check kind with Chad, they were TJs chicken with fennel & red peppers & ?] then cut into chunks.
sauté 1/2 c. diced shallot or onion
add jar of TJs red pepper & artichoke tapenade and sausage & simmer
serve over pasta with grated parmesan.

veggie version: skip the sausage, and parm if you’re more like that.

2. pork tenderloin

butterfly pork tenderloin
sauté diced shallot
mix in bowl with olive oil, cumin, turmeric, coarse salt.
spread on butterflied tenderloin, roll up, wrap with bacon and secure with toothpicks
place in pan with carrots [chopped into chunks] and mushrooms [small, whole] on each side
put slice of bacon across top of veg to keep them moist.
bake at 450° ~45 min til interior temp is 160°.
served with a baked potato though a baguette would have been preferable.

In the garden right now, we have lots crazy-blooming rosemary, a bowl of unidentified bulbs that are flowering one by one [current guest star? HYACINTH!], and some Iceland poppies over at City Hall.

Things I’ve been working on this week…

1. I bought some silver spraypaint and tried it out on some unfinished wooden beads — they came out pretty well, they have a nice vintage mod-style texture — and a piece of glass — not so well, it is not as reflective as I’d expected it would be, though enough to get something of a self portrait in.

I have a can of silver spraypaint and I'm going to use it

2. Contemplating my sea glass I got on a trip to Victoria BC. It’s been sitting in a tin on the porch for several years, I finally cleaned it up and put it in this nice glass jar I bought at an estate sale last month. I may make some pendants. I might just leave it like this. I might try out some of the sea glass projects I’ve been bookmarking lately.

3. I had my first sale on Etsy — SO EXCITING. This is a red charm bracelet I was working on at craft night [Thursdays, 6-9 pm at Julie’s if you’re in the area]. It has vintage buttons and various glass beads — flowers, ladybirds, hearts, and other lovely things — all in warm reds and oranges. You can see some of my other sale items at gwen.etsy.com.

Be mine?

This is my favorite, it is part of the display at Ole’s Waffle Shop here in Alameda, which is the most perfectly oldschoolest diner around. I highly recommend the pancakes and bacon and hashed browns and sitting at the counter and grabbing a box of crayons so you can have drawing contests on your paper placemats while you wait for your order.

Think pink

1. I picked up this vintage pink number at an estate sale last year. Left it hanging off a table at the farmer’s market a couple weeks ago. Went back last week, they remembered seeing it but didn’t know where it had gotten to. They searched the farm, found it, and remembered to bring it for me this week. Now it is raining and we are so happy together.

It’s super-craft day!

It’s super-craft day!

A lot of this going on today with a client call and some housework in between. In a bit I have weekly coffee with J., when we sit around working and talking and eating and drinking, then this evening is the first craft night of the new year at Julie’s, the best café ever.* You should pop by.

Starting February 4th, Julie’s will be open later on Thursdays for you to get your craft on.
KNIT, SEW, BEAD, WRITE, DRAW…
DO whatever it is you do, and do it with friends at Julie’s.
Inspire and support each other on getting your projects done!
(The kitchen will close at 7pm, but drinks and baked goods will be available all night.)

I keep thinking about sewing and felt but I’ll probably stick to jewelry. This is a necklace I made a couple weeks ago, I am feeling a strong affinity for flowers right now.

Red flowers, pink ladybirds and grey leaves

* As long as we’re talking about the 3/50 project, I’d also like to send a special shout-out to Ark chinese restaurant — some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had — and Raja Market [née Bonfare, where they now have several aisles of Indian spices and foods].

This is how we do it

Posted by on Feb 3, 2010 in photo | 1 comment

This goes out to the folks in colder climes, this is how we roll in California in the middle of winter. Lots and lots of veggies, not so much on the fruit this time of year. Which is okay, we always need to eat more vegetables. We spent about $35 on a two big bags of mostly-organic produce, a 10# bag of oranges, a fresh baguette from La Farine, a heavenly bunch of narcissus, and one samosa. And I retrieved my umbrella.

Radish and cabbage Rainbow tatoes

Clementine mandarins Seedless navel oranges

Bunch of carrots Carrots of many hues
