The one year we trick-or-treated in our neighborhood, when D'arby was in preschool and gussied up like a pink Power Ranger, we braved the front door of this run-down home.

An ancient woman with a gaping eye socket and faded blue numbers tattooed on her forearm answered the door and gave D'arby a quart-size ziploc bag full of stale, stuck-together ribbon candy.

That's the only time I've ever seen the woman in the 16 years I've lived here.

A few weeks ago, all her battered old furniture was piled up out in front of the house; the neighbors told me she'd died alone, like I guess she'd been for some time. (Photo Friday: Neglect)
