Obvious to you, but new to me

Not to be used before a drug test.

I've been cooking the past couple nights, because I made the boy go real grocery shopping. Usually, lately, it's been "I don't have much time, I've got to study" and I settle for "If you could just go get a loaf of bread and some milk for the girl's breakfast and lunch, we can go real shopping later this week" but later this week never comes.

But I made him stock up on all sorts of things the other day, gave him a nice long list, enough for the week, at least, and nothing's terribly notable, it's all along the lines of some sort of meat and some sort of starch and some sort of vegetable, but I made salad dressing last night.

My experience in this particular genre is relegated to that ranch powder that you mix with milk and sour cream (I think it says to use mayo, but I never read those things), and that's been fine; the girl likes it bland, and it's infinitely superior to the bottled stuff. But I was in a mood last night, and I was thinking about this dressing D.'s friend made a while back, something involving poppies, so I did a search on Recipe Source, and looked at a couple of the poppy-related salad dressing recipes, and wrote down a list of the ingredients used by all of them, and threw them together

(mayo, mustard, milk, a little oil, a little vinegar, honey, pepper, and, of course, poppyseeds)

and threw it over some romaine

and cut up some apples

and it was just marvelous.

I ate so much I could barely eat any of the proper dinner.

I don't know why I don't do that more often. It's so easy, and so, so good. I want to know more things that I can do like that.

You know, when I read the byline, I thought you meant that special kind of 'magic' cooking that you shouldn't eat before a drug test. Salad dressing is tasty and all, but it wasn't what I expected..

Sam, I think she was referring to the poppy seeds. Didn't I read not too long ago about a high school where the students protested a new drug-testing policy by handing out poppyseed muffins?
