Sat down for a brief chat this afternoon with Ignacio De La Fuente, president of the Oakland city council and mayoral candidate, at a meet and greet at La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen in Old Oakland. He said as mayor he would concentrate first on crime and education, and restructuring the "mismanaged" city government to better use Oakland's almost-$1 billion annual budget. He mentioned several times his desire to ramp up and make more cohesive the city's preK-6 afterschool programs.

Coming up: a mayoral candidates' forum and debate with council member Nancy Nadel and former California representative Ron Dellums on Monday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Oakland Marriott/Convention Center (10th Street @ Broadway). Free and open to the public, as are many house parties and other events (listed on candidates' sites below).

The deadline to register to vote is May 22 for the June 6 election (How do I register?).
