Day 2 Necklace : Vintage green buttons

Necklace a Day 2 green buttons

Early last month I read a blog post talking about ways to reorganize your jewelry-making stash for the new year by dividing it into three categories: keep, discard, and repurpose. Which I thought was pretty genius — I have a zillion little half-finished or finished-but-I’m-so-over pieces in piles everywhere yet it never occurred to me to take them apart. Really.

This necklace comprises the cannibalized remains of several necklaces and bracelets I made a couple years back when I was super into the vintage buttons. I still am, but something about each piece just wasn’t quite right, so I put them aside and let them gather dust for a long time.

So when I read that blog post, the button pieces were the first things that popped into my head. I took them apart and collaged all the buttons and a couple accents beads together then added a fatter chain for a little more heft. Which I really like and am tempted to keep (that green focal button is one of my favorites, it has this really awesome fading along the edges) but I really don’t need more jewelry.*

You, however, DO need more jewelry and you can buy this necklace on etsy.

* I say that, but really? If you are looking for a Valentine’s present to buy me, I would wear this every single day.

Day 1 Birds Nest Pendant

It’s Day 1 of the Necklace a Day Challenge so I’m starting with something easy. I’ve made a bunch of these oversized birds nest pendants before, but don’t usually get around to selling them because my friends keep asking for them.

February Challenge: Necklace a Day

Posted by on Feb 1, 2012 in craft, meme, photo | 0 comments

necklaces by gwen!

Fellow East Bay Arts Collective member Katherine of Percent is organizing a necklace-a-day challenge for February. I always see those 30-day prompts (your instagrams, blogging cues, drawings, etc.) and think they’d be fun but they’re not quite motivating enough for me.

This one is right up my alley, since jewelry-making is the one thing I do regularly — I have my tray next to my TV-watching chair and it’s a good excuse for watching guilty-pleasure shows (“But I’m making something! I just like the background noise!”). And I am really, really bad at getting around to photographing and posting my jewelry on my etsy store, so it’s great to have this commitment to get me to get off my butt and do something with my jewelry besides letting it gather dust.

I’m making one necklace each day (I started last night), then photographing, blogging, and etsy-posting the following day. I’m going to try very hard, anyway. And I might make the occasional bracelet or pair of earrings instead some days. You will have to check back to find out! (If you like me on Facebook, you can get updated when I post there.)

Anyone who’s interested in the challenge should join in, see Katherine’s original February Challenge: Necklace a Day post on her blog for details.

Bananas Foster

Posted by on Aug 11, 2011 in recipe | 1 comment

From Famous Foods from Famous Places (1964), which is filled with pretty much any kind of mid-century fanciness you can think of.

Commander’s Palace (New Orleans) Bananas Foster

This classic is super easy and a great use for that bunch of almost-rotten bananas that’s going to start attracting fruit flies any second.

June 29: Bananas Foster

Slice 6 ripe bananas lengthwise. Brush with lemon juice.

1 c sugar and 1/2 c butter — cook over low heat until dissolved, add bananas, cook awhile til soft.

Serve as is or with ice cream or whipped cream or whatever. You are going to lapse into a sugar coma either way.

Summer Colours Week 2011: Pink

I had a lot of fun seeking out and setting up shots for Summer Colours Week‘s pink day…even managed to sneak one blue and one green in, too [I’ll put those up later]. I tried to represent a mix of outdoors [flowers and travel] and things I love doing in summer [yard sales, crafting, collecting bits and bobs at the beach].

Summer Colours Week 2011: Yellow

It’s Summer Colours Week again!

I love working with warm summer-colored beads, the yellows just pop against your tan.

June 26

I don’t remember if I posted this, a birdhouse I decorated for a Kentucky Derby-themed party. It ended up being to heavy to sit on the hat all evening so it became a dining room decoration instead.

put birds on it

And a couple pieces I have over on etsy…

Fresh-squeezed fizzy Meyer lemonade for summer!

Posted by on Jun 21, 2011 in garden, photo, recipe | 1 comment

Fresh-squeezed

Fresh-squeezed fizzy Meyer lemonade

Pick a bunch of lemons.
Juice them.
Add sugar [or honey/stevia/agave/whatever sweetener you like].
I usually do about 1 c. sugar to 2 c. lemon juice. I think most people like it sweeter.
Mix well. I have a locking pitcher so I just close it up and shake like crazy for a minute or two.

This is your lemon starter — it’s good in the fridge for at least a week, probably much longer, but ours never lasts that long.

Fill a glass 3/4 way with fizzy water [or regular water, if you don’t like the fizzy] and a couple ice cubes.

Top off with the lemon starter — this is highly subjective, but general guidelines are as follows:

– if your drink is too sweet, your starter needs more lemons.
– if it’s too tart, more sugar in your starter.
– too watery, more starter with your water.
– too sweet and tart? Add more water.

I make my lemonade glass by glass — if you want a full jug all at once, just fill up your pitcher with water. Et voila!

—–

If you’re feeling adventurous, toss in some

– strawberry juice [slice strawberries, toss with a sprinkling of sugar and a tbsp or two of water, let sit overnight, mash and/or puree, depending on how chunky you like things]
ginger syrup [I’ll bet vanilla-ginger is divine, too]
– lavender syrup [boil, cool, strain, and store: 1/2 c. dried lavender, 1 c. sugar, 1 c. water].

Crispy chickpeas

Posted by on Jun 13, 2011 in photo, recipe | 0 comments

Some girlfriends and I have beach day whenever our schedules and the weather allow [which hasn’t been often lately, we’re having a cold, wet almost-summer here in northern California — the annual sandcastle contest was even cancelled] and we bring a stack of guilty pleasures magazines, including Cosmo, one issue of which featured a sidebar of quick snacks to make with chickpeas (garbanzos), which are loaded with fiber and some other good stuff.

May 20

Crispy chickpeas
Sauté chickpeas in a bit of olive oil with a pinch of coarse salt til crispy. Sprinkle with parmesan.

One of these days I’m going to get around to putting stuff up on my etsy but I feel I’ve accomplished quite a bit just by managing to take a photo of something.
